What is the point of Evony and How do you play it?

IDK How to play and IDK What the point is?

Point is…….attacking and defending yourself.
Its a game that takes time and effort
You attack others, they attack you
You build cities, train troops,
blablabla
Pretty fun game until later you’ll get tired of it
And as dude above said you do need food for population but you also need food for troops
As you first get into the game, your thoughts might be, "I need lumber!" but you’ll soon discover that you need food more than lumber

I play it and there is no point to it.
People attack me all the time but you know there’s so much land an resources that it just isn’t worth attacking people and I have a pretty nice castle (nothing to brag about).
I’m in it Just for the hell of it, it’s not like I have a job.
I heard (saw a tex) a few people argue about the nature of the game, one guy saying well the point of the game is to attack people.
I butted in and said "No, it isn’t; you make the game like that. If people would just build and not attack others than that would be the nature of the game"
This was beyond his understanding.
Right now I’m working on defense so it wouldn’t/wont be worth coming after me.
It’s hard to say just how to play it, I’m so new at it.
But as you play they tell you what to build and how to go through most of the options.
You need houses for population growth and farms to feed them.
Upgrade the town hall as fast as possible.
